Engineered Flooring

Engineered wood floors - what are they?

Engineered wood floors are produced by laminating thin ply layers (see picture below) that are glued together. The base layer is generally either a hardwood and/or soft plywood type of material, which incorporates the tongue and groove system. The top thicker hardwood layer is glued on top surface of the base layer (plywood) and is available in almost any hardwood species.

Advantages:
  • Price
  • Engineered wood floors are more stable than solidwood floors
Disadvantages:
  • Engineered floors can only be sanded 2 or 3 times depending on the thickness of the surface layer chosen.
  • The thicker the surface layer, the more expensive the floor is.
